"PRIVILEGE
- SHARING"
"P
- S" IS A PURELY ETHICAL IDEAL, INDEPENDENT OF RELIGION, POLITICS AND
OTHER ORGANIZATIONS.
THE BASIC IDEA IS THAT ONE SHARES ONE'S PRIVILEGES NON - BUREAUCRATICALLY
AND WITHOUT EXPECTING ANYTHING IN RETURN. IF NECESSARY ONE ACCEPTS THINGS
TOO. FREE FROM MORAL OBLIGATION, FRUSTRATIONS AND OTHER OPINIONS.
THE ONLY RULE IS THAT THERE ARE NO FIXED RULES.
ONE'S "HEART" (HAPPINESS) WILL DEAL WITH AFFAIRS BY MEANS OF ITS
"LANGUAGE" OF LOVE, COMPASSION AND HUMBLENESS.
ONLY WITHOUT FORCE MAY A FLOWER BLOOM.
IT
IS A FUNDAMENTAL RIGHT
OF ALL BEINGS TO BE HAPPY.
...first
I traveled in India as an independent budget traveler. I had my mind
and heart set on traveling. When visiting Bodhgaya, Bihar I by
chance met a "Privilege-Sharing" volunteer teacher. I went
to the school and visited the villages. I was very impressed with what I
saw. The love and the dedication and the freedom to express these
things. When I left after this brief visit I promised to help the
"P-S" workers all that I could. I did not realize that
this would change my life. When I returned home I immediately wrote
a newsletter and approached the community and many friends. I
explained about the project and invited these people to join with love,
prayer and/or financial donations. The response was warm and heartfelt.
I went to live and to work in the village of Newtaridih for Jan. and Feb.
2003. I lived with the family of Sanjay Kumar, the head teacher and
felt very much welcomed and at home. I also spent a great deal of
time with Pappu Kumar who is part of the team and leads the Social Work
part of the program. I helped as much as I could. Language was
a hindrance but somehow I managed to work with the little children in the
Cowshed School. I really was there to study everything that I could
and to help as much as I could. Thanks to Kurt and the generosity of
the volunteers I had a bicycle to ride in the countryside. I fell even
more in love with "P-S" and the workers and their families and
the recipients of their loving care. I took my first digital photos
and felt that it was my job to record as much as possible to show the
"P-S" supporters that I knew.
Most of this summer I spent working on the digital slide show. I
managed to make a DVD and a video but so far have not learned how to put
my voice to it. After the summer I went to visit my birth island of
Bermuda and found myself giving presentations in many schools and one
church on the island is very supportive of this work. Then I visited
friends and family on my way home and gave presentations there also.
The local community is warming up to my involvement with PS and I find
that I give quite a lot of presentations in schools where I also let the
children dress up in turbans and saris. When in India I am not much
use in the medical field except I have a working relationship with a very
fine doctor who really helps our people. We work primarily with the
untouchable class.
